                      There are four obstacles to the Believer’s Spiritual Growth

                                              The obstacles are:

1. Soul Life’s Natural Affection or Love.
2. Self of the Soul. 
3. Soul Life’s love of the World. 
4. Soul Life’s Power.

     Man’s soul is man’s own self, man’s personality, and all faculties of his/her own life. Humans were created by God as a three part being, they are body, soul, and spirit (human). When God created Adam and Eve, they were in perfect fellowship with God because their human spirit was in control of their lives. After the fall of Adam and Eve their soul life took control and their spirit lost its dominion and became powerless. The soul is controlled by self-life, which includes the will, emotions, and mind. In this state, self is in control and all its actions are based on being selfish. God cannot be in fellowship with anyone that is controlled by self. That is why it is imperative that we are born again and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

      What happens when an individual receives salvation? The body is the housing for the soul, the soul is the housing for the human spirit. The human spirit has no life or power to take back its dominion. Because of the human spirit lack of power, the self-life occupies the soul and lives. The actions of the self-life are demonstrated through the body such as envy, jealousy, natural love, covetousness, etc.  Their lives are distorted because they do not have a personal relationship with God. It is God that empowers us to understand the purpose of our existence and value.

      Salvation means to be saved from your sins. An individual is convicted of their sins, he/she repents of their sins and accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Next, they receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, when this happens the Holy Spirit quickens (enlivens) the human spirit. The human spirit receives power from the Holy Spirit to regain the dominion of the whole body. The Holy Spirit dwells in the human spirit and the human spirit becomes responsible for being in control of the whole body.
